It is great to start playing a guitar and to immediately feel and hear what sets it apart as a quality instrument. Here, with the Barton it is the complete feeling of control that she gives the player with a full and concentrated tone that is even and wonderfully consistent. The more that you ask of this guitar the more she gives, however the controlled, distinct and well rounded tone always remains giving the player fantastic support and range.

Her bass voice is rich and ‘fruity’ (meaning colourful!) supporting and enhancing a smooth and defined treble. The overall evenness brings out every detail bringing strength to your music with a lovely dense texture and clear, focused projection.

My new project is arranging Bach’s Cello Suite no.3. This guitar really helped me to project the underlying vitality of the music easily sustaining the musical line through the long phrases and maintaining quality and concentration of tone right across the 3 octave range. She gave me easy musical shape and direction, clear and lively harmony and wonderful momentum ‘carrying’ the listener through the music.

Another of my current projects is Recuerdos de La Alhambra by Tarrega, finally learning how to play tremolo properly after 40 years! The quick and accurate response of this guitar is ideal for this difficult task. The treble tone is full and focused and the fast projection helps you to be light of touch whilst achieving a strong and sustained melody through the tremolo.

In Belle by Ferrer and Tarantella by Mertz the power of the guitar shines through. Notes are even, firm and intense across the strings and the range of the fingerboard meaning that every detail is clear adding to the fullness of her overall voice. Combine this with absolute control, the guitar reacting quickly and confidently to subtle contrasts in strength and angle of stroke, for example wonderful sforzando, and the result is drama and impact, perfect for expressive Romantic music. The treble here is exciting and radiant supported by a rich and gutsy bass voice with sparkling semiquaver passages, fluid arpeggios and rousing harmonies. The clarity of texture was particularly noticeable in the Tarantella giving me all the impact I require to highlight the storytelling.

I finished my review with Lauro waltzes. This music was perfect to reflect the highlights – clear, full and rounded tone, wonderful depth and focus combined with quick projection and distinct articulation giving great rhythm and syncopation, and best of all a light and effortless feel. She is a musical and expressive instrument with a lovely control that supports her player and shouts potential!
