This guitar is in beautiful condition having been very much treasured by her owner, well looked after and played with dedication and great enjoyment. I know this for a fact as the owner is a pupil of mine!

It has been a pleasure for me to see this Aram guitar grow in stature over the years developing a stunning, full bodied and rich tone and a real presence that makes people sit up and take notice. I use the word stunning for her voice and her looks are definitely a match for this with fantastic colours and contrasts in the wood of the back and sides and a spruce top that has taken a rich honey colour as it has naturally darkened.

As always with guitars by Kevin Aram the workmanship is second to none providing a perfect example of maturity that really counts for something. Her full tone which has depth and rich resonances gives her player a voice of experience, with an inner strength, even tone and beautifully clear and defined notes. The sound is pure and direct with a mature warmth that has developed around the individual notes enhancing her clarity and giving her player excellent support and the confidence to explore the music.

In reviewing this guitar I have been particularly excited to see how much more she has to give beyond the amount of detail and breadth of sound that she has now. I loved the rich, concentrated and even tone across the treble and bass strings. Purity of tone gives strength and this was immediately obvious in Bach’s Prelude, BWV 998 where the flow and shape of the constant triplet quavers was easy to achieve giving me long phrases and a wonderful musical momentum. The sixth string ‘D’ tuning is magnificent allowing the treble notes to float above a powerful bass line and letting the written music speak freely.

One of the highlights with Kevin Aram’s guitars is the clarity and definition in the trebles and this guitar has retained all of that whilst developing a warm and glowing resonance around the sound.

In the opening thirds of Andante Largo by Sor this really came to the fore with a beautifully sweet and sustained tone, the notes seemingly ‘hanging’ in the air. This piece is full of musical detail and ‘intrigue’ and I really enjoyed the great variety of sounds that I found in the guitar highlighting all of the textures and emotions in the music.

One of my favourite pieces at the moment is By Candlelight by Andrew York. It is truly haunting music, very evocative and atmospheric and this guitar loved it! She is very easy to play and I had so much control over my sound achieving subtle changes in tone and dynamic with a light touch.

She has what I think of as hidden strength, not obviously flamboyant and loud, but confident and assured with great support and direct projection. All of this adds up to musicality, drama and impact particularly evident when I played Romance and Tarantella by Mertz with her clarity giving great excitement and direction in the latter.

I finished the review playing through the Sonatina by Torroba (I am finally learning this) and came up with a defining conclusion! All that I have discussed gives the music character. This guitar gives you reasons to enjoy the music all the time, reasons to explore and develop her voice and most importantly reasons to enjoy your playing.
