Our introduction to German Classical guitars was through Hermann Hauser, well one has to start somewhere ☺ Here we found a maker whose family history is renowned the World over and whose instruments have a timeless quality and are built from a wood stock set aside generations ago.

Looking to expand our range of German guitars we were introduced to Jochen Rothel and Andre Marvi, two wonderful makers whose approach to the classical guitar is very different, you can read more on their individual pages.

The build quality and finish is exceptional and the vocal balance across the strings is precise and even delivering to the player an outstanding level of control in performance.

Selina and I are always looking for guitars with not only a high level of projection but also clarity and control of musical colour and expression. Our German makers deliver this and more.

This guitar has two stand-out features that immediately catch the eye and ear.

Firstly the wood used is absolutely stunning with a beautiful ‘3D’ rippling effect on the back, sound board and neck (all different woods of course) that catches the light and gives a very ‘classy’ feel.

Secondly, and more importantly, the magnitude of the sound! She has a big and beautiful open voice that is radiant and colourful in character creating great impact with very quick, easy response and fantastic projection.

This responsiveness means that I could get perfect clarity and articulation in fast passages because I only needed a feather light touch on the strings, particularly effective in Abenleid by Mertz where the character is created with sextuplet semiquavers accompanying sustained melody and bass. The tone is very concentrated. There is plenty of warm and supportive resonance but definition remains the key here. This focus and intensity lead to real sparkle and life in the treble and compelling rich sonority in the bass – full-bodied is really an understatement!

In Bach’s Prelude BWV999 I could hear every detail of the subtly changing harmonies through the arpeggios giving me texture, movement and shaping all supported and driven by a strong and sustained bass voice.

I particularly enjoyed playing Villa Lobos for the expansive and fluid tone across the full range of notes. She comes across as a supremely confident guitar even at this young age with great intensity in the upper register. Sustain and range of tone and colour are excellent and as I played I could feel the potential for growth – a great feeling! In Prelude 3 I loved the massive and rousing chords, the balance across the strings again highlighting detail and in Prelude 4 the seemingly never ending bass notes gave me full and ‘fat’ sustain, long phrases and notes that enjoy vibrato. Added to all of this, crisp and precise articulation gave ‘easy’ speed in the central section and breadth and depth of tone gave me a completely wonderful final chord!

I am learning Ciacona by Weiss at the moment and here I could easily achieve the focus and ‘gravity’ that I wanted, a distinctive and weighty bass voice leading the music through the variations in the treble with clearly highlighted textures from full rousing harmonies to shapely melodic intervals and delicate dolce.

The most important piece for me in this review was the Ponce Folias Variations, again a piece that I am in the (long) process of learning! This piece has a ‘huge’ scope that often does not feel possible to achieve on one guitar. However the response from this Marvi guitar was magnificent. She gave me wonderful deep and dark D minor harmonies, great anguish in dissonances and clashes, a large palette of colour and texture and a ‘proper’ fortissimo! The fugue was particularly enjoyable as I felt that could happily sustain and follow all three voices hearing every subtle shaping while ‘sinking into’ some wonderful and captivating harmony.

In summary this guitar is compelling and invigorating with rich and vibrant tonal character, loads of detail and substantial yet always clear sound. The depth and breadth of her voice has immediate impact and for a powerful instrument she is ‘suprisingly’ easy to play.

My final thought would be that often powerful guitars do not ‘show’ emotion well – this one does and offers an exciting musical journey to her new partner!

I have to start with the stunning looks of this guitar.

The table has the appearance of rippled honey, the rosewood appears to be on fire and the workmanship immaculate. She speaks of the history and quality of the luthier and is simply a beautiful work of art to own!

However, this is not enough of course for a concert instrument and so on to the important bits.

I was immediately struck by her even, rounded and easy tone. It seems that a beautiful, pure and focussed sound is the norm for this guitar. This means that long melodic lines, voicing and detail within chords become much easier to attain, in turn helping the player to develop their musicianship through these important skills. The sound is even and beautifully balanced across the strings, giving you excellent control and as I played I could hear the colours and textures coming out and "growing".

These qualities were particularly evident as I was playing Britten's "Nocturnal" which is a piece that relies heavily on the player being able to communicate the emotions described in the titles of each movement.

The single line melody of "Musingly" was a delight to play and the clarity and definition for "Restless" and "March like" were seemingly effortless. The ntertwining lines of the final Dowland song were easy to highlight and shape and I was able to get a tone that really brought out the emotion of the original words.

This focus and purity in sound really opens lots more doors as you are playing and gives you many more options to work with.

I played a variety of other music and was surprised at the versatility and range of colour already available in such a new guitar. The fullness of the bass voice came into its own in Gary Ryan's Wild West pieces, where I also found the overall clarity of the guitar helped to define the driving and complicated rhythms.

Again, the bass was rich and full in the Chaconne and the definition was not lost, leading to beautiful "scrunchy" harmonies.

I really enjoyed playing this guitar, particularly as she responded to my thoughts and was able to "sing" my musical ideas without me having to try hard!

Definitely an instrument with an exciting future.

On first playing this guitar has an open and glowing sound with clear, freely singing notes that have obvious depth and quality of tone supported by mellow resonance and excellent sustain.

When playing Birds by Gary Ryan these characteristics give the player a sense of freedom and relaxation moving around the guitar. Her smooth and silky overall voice combines lovely clarity on individual notes with a beautiful, warm and blended campanella sound.

She is very sensitive to small changes in finger speed and angle of stroke which gives the player great control and an already wide colour palette.

This is of course very exciting for the future as she plays in.

The sound really blossomed as I put more energy through the strings achieving strong and full bodied sound without too much effort.

The bass voice is substantial and vibrant with plenty of richness and velvet in the character as well as the definition that highlights the melodies, for example towards the end of Rosita where energy was very much in evidence.

In Sor’s D minor study, op.6 no.9, this concentrated bass tone gave me great harmonic drive and harmonic support to the flowing sixths in the melody. This full lower voice gives freedom and support to the developing treble voice which is showing fantastic potential in its polished and creamy tone and initial tightness, indicating plenty more to come.

This was nowhere more obvious than in my favourite Lauro Waltz. I was able to achieve real sparkle and fizz in the top voice with plenty of excitement in the syncopated rhythms due to the clarity and definition of tone up to the highest register.

In Capricho Catalan I loved the balance between a fruity and full bass rhythm and a glowing treble melody while, in complete contrast, the same control in By Candle Light by York gave me fluid and full gentle rounded tone. The range of softer sounds is always an indication of quality of tone.

I think that the key here is the focussed and even voice. A concentrated sound that has real musical impact and gives the guitarist so many choices.

Funnily enough this was summed up for me by Villa Lobos study no.1. Some may think this strange but with this guitar the control and evenness across the range, as well as an easy left hand action and response to right hand touch, gave me harmonic drive, intensity of sound, energy and movement.
