My first thought on playing the M20 is how open her sound is. She instantly stands out as an exceptional instrument, and produces a wide variety of sounds and colours that one can spend hours exploring.

What is most interesting about the M20 is her characteristic tone; there is clear definition there without the typical brightness of a spruce top guitar. It is lacking in that harder “edge”, and in its place is a sound that is distinct but warm, subtle but confident. Perhaps it is just the nice weather at the moment but in my mind this guitar evokes the warmth of bathing in sunlight.

The campanella style of Birds Flew Over the Spire emphasizes the silky nature of the M20s tone and the voicing is incredible; her clarity allows one to shape the music and experiment with colour. The melody in the middle strings is warm and rich but the definition and focus of the treble strings in particular makes the higher melodies simply soar.

I am not exaggerating when I say that playing the M20 instantly brightens my mood!

Playing Capricho Arabe, the guitar responds with a musicality that is a joy to experience. The harmonics ring out with clarity and the guitar’s subtlety lends itself to creating suspense. The fast runs are fun and easy to play; because of the M20s round, balanced tone I notice that pushing singular notes is much easier. Therefore the accents in this piece stand out more, and create a whole new perspective to the music. The basses are firm and focused, with a resonance that fills the room without being overpowering.

The M20 has a wonderful depth of sound and a voice that is soft and sweet but with so much character. She is an incredibly musical and sophisticated instrument with great potential, a first concert guitar that will just keep on giving as she is put through her paces.

Definitely one to try if you can.
