This guitar produces a nice round tone which is still direct enough to cut through and resonate nicely. She is capable of producing a big sound, although she is not unsubtle. I particularly enjoyed playing Moreno-Torroba’s Torija, the trebles have a nice direct attack while retaining the guitar’s thick sound, and the result is a wonderful creamy tone and a nice balance across the fretboard.

I find I am able to listen to myself play while singing the melody in my head, giving the music more expression and allowing me to experiment with and develop the sound. Playing Villa-Lobos 4th Prelude I am able to try the guitar’s middle frequencies and basses, and she does not disappoint! The initial descending melody is warm and chocolatey, and even though I’m currently playing sans thumbnail the bass melody in the second section holds its own; the broken chords over the top are well balanced and light.

When I come to play harmonics they are subtle, but musical. In terms of aesthetics, she is stunning and classy with a deep cedar top and rosewood back and sides that are so dark as to be almost black. As with many guitars the 5P does have a ‘sweet spot’ for tone and that lies in the clarity of her middle and higher frequencies. However her strengths really do lie in her musicality. It is easy to separate the music and bring out melodic lines, even when they are interlinked (Birds Flew Over the Spire, for example) and as a result she is an excellent guitar for a beginner or an intermediate player wanting to develop their musicality and experiment with expression.
