"Storm Damaged Guitar".

For the past ten years or so I have been collecting and using
English timbers in my guitars.

Prior to this guitar I have used them primarily for decoration in
the rosette, purflings and bindings and also for the centre panel
of three piece backs.

With this guitar I decided to make the back and sides of Walnut
with a back centre panel of Yew. The result is certainly a very
attractive and playable guitar. The sound is very intimate and
appealing reminding me of a Nineteenth Century guitar.

The Walnut came from Exeter and the Yew from Mount Edgcumbe
near Plymouth. Both were brought down in storms at the end of the
1980's hence "Storm Damaged Guitar".

Most of the native timbers I use are from storm damaged trees and
can range from a small branch to a complete tree. I have a four wheel
drive and a trailer and I take the trunk to a sawmill to be planked,
season the planks and then slice them into the thin strips needed to
make a guitar. I have built a timber-drying kiln and have been
experimenting with this.

I like the idea of making something as beautiful as a guitar from timber
that I have found and that otherwise would be used for firewood.

I have a Walnut, Yew, Cherry, Apple, Pear, Plum, Hawthorne,
Sycamore, Holly and Plane (Lacewood). At the moment I am making
a guitar with Yew back and sides for a customer in the USA.
