This is definitely a book I wish I’d been introduced to earlier! These simple Spanish pieces are beautifully printed making for easy reading by the student. 15 pieces, including Rumba, Pasodoblillo, Bolero and Malaquena, are an enjoyable introduction to familiar guitar styles.

This is definitely a book I wish I’d been introduced to earlier!

Joep Wanders has written music in a variety of styles for beginners; the theme of this book as revealed by the title is Spanish music. In addition to writing music that conforms to the Spanish style, Wanders incorporates flamenco techniques into the pieces – you will find a number of examples of golpe and tambora. In my mind this makes the music infinitely more interesting to learn as you immerse yourself in unfamiliar percussive techniques.

On the contents page Wanders has included a helpful glossary to describe any unfamiliar words to the reader.

The book contains 15 pieces that become progressively more challenging, however the music is engaging from the off. Entrada Libre begins the book with a catchy melodic line that is easy to bring out and contains a couple of ad libs for those who want to expand even more on the music. El Testamento de Amelia is more lyrical with an interesting syncopated bassline. Flores de Primavera and La Fiesta Espanola highlight the right hand technical issue of adding strummed chords to a piece, and La Guitar Espanola consists of variations on a simple upbeat tune to shake the music up a bit. Wanders has also written in a variety of Spanish dance styles that feature syncopated rhythms (Tango, Bolero, Rumba) and keep your eyes peeled for a familiar tune - but I will leave that one with you.

Despite this being a beginners book there are plenty of examples of musical variety and interweaving musical lines, encouraging us to pay close attention to which “voice” is singing and concentrate on how we can bring them out. The result is 15 pieces of music that will continue to engage both listeners and players, even as the player advances through more difficult music. One to add to the collection.

The book has three sections: 10 rhythmic studies, each focusing on a particular rhythm which is introduced in each piece by a 2-bar phrase. 10 arpeggio studies, each based on a right-hand pattern. 10 legato studies, descending and ascending slurs and a mix of both. These studies are a valuable contribution to the beginner's technical development. Difficulty level grade 2/4

Skill Level

Intermediate

These short studies offer a wide variety of techniques, and are generally universally helpful in improving your playing.

Grades 2/4 on the site, but looking in some of the grade books I think some grade 1 players would benefit from the easier ones?

The first ten studies are rhythmic, and Wanders gives an ‘example rhythm’ below the title to let us know exactly what it is we are meant to be practicing. As with most books they start off simple and move to more complicated rhythms with dotted notes and semiquavers. This is great for learning to recognise rhythms and improving sight reading; there is also fingering in some of the pieces, reminding us to alternate and to be aware of the finger we are using with any given note. Wanders also reminds us that even though these are studies, they are not necessarily ‘un-musical’. He writes performance directions which encourage us to and add colour to the notes making the music more exciting.

My favourite studies in this book are the arpeggio studies, they are great right and left hand exercises suitable for any standard of player; I will be incorporating these into my practice regime as warm ups! No.12 – Basso Chromatica is particularly good as it offers variations on the original [p i m a] quaver pattern. We are encouraged to be musical with No.14 – Prelude on the B-String in order to bring out the melody that is closely interwoven with the accompaniment. There are a nice variety of styles in this book.

Last in the book are the legato studies. These are excellent for building up strength and balance in the left hand as they require 2 and 3 note slurs that need to be even. They are musically engaging and you will definitely find yourself singing them hours after practice. This book would be perfect as a prelude to starting the Sor or Carcassi studies.

This sort of collection is great since as well as including some well-known and very popular pieces it introduces guitarists to some fairly obscure pieces and less well-known composers. This the third book in a series of three volumes contains the very best of Spanish guitar music. Traditional Spanish and Hispanic music by composers such as Rodrigo, Calatayud, Llobet, Cardoso, Sainz De La Maza and other masters.

This sort of collection is great since as well as including some well-known and very popular pieces it introduces guitarists to some fairly obscure pieces and less well-known composers.

Included are quite a wide variety of styles from within this genre from the brightness and relative simplicity of Bolero and El Majo by Calatayud to the contemporary feel of Pajaros De Primavera by Rodrigo and the rich, romantic melody of Capricho Arabe by Tarrega.

The edition is very good with plenty of space allowed for each piece (which is very important for the amount of notes that some of them contain) and clear musical instructions and fingering.

As for the latter, there is not too much; the Torroba and Rodrigo have none at all allowing much more freedom for the performer even if it takes a little longer to work it out!

If you are considering this book for one or two pieces it is very worth while. For one thing the price is very good for the variety that you get!

Madronas by Torroba (grade 8) is a rich and beautiful piece that really captures the spirit of Spain and highlights the warmth, sonority and lyricism of the guitar as brought to us by Segovia.

Capricho Arabe is also here – a great repertoire standard with its soaring melodic lines and rich harmonies.

Another highlight for me is the music by Sainz De La Maza, which, unfortunately, is not heard so much these days. He uses the guitar very effectively having a lighter, simpler feel and so depicting the vitality of Spain.

There are some big and more complicated and contemporary pieces by Llobet as well as his glorious arrangement of El Noi de la Mare.

Some of these pieces take more working out and effort to learn but the experience is great for any guitarist in learning about musical style, shape and interpretation.

The pieces here are beautiful and peaceful; we have to learn new sounds and the techniques of playing contrapuntal lines but at the same time the music encourages freedom and invention. Learning this music is not really about technical virtuosity, for example how fast or loud we can play, but about control, understanding and listening - nurturing the musician in us.

Skill Level

There is a short introduction at the beginning of this edition describing the sources used and introducing the musical style. Particularly interesting is the explanation of the titles that are so different to what we are used to!

Ricercari is an Italian verb meaning to seek/ quest. It was originally used in music to denote ‘trying out an instrument” or “prelude” so referring to an improvised introductory piece. In the 16th century ‘Ricercari’ and ‘Fantasia’ came to be applied to instrumental compositions that were mostly imitative with no clear distinction between the two.

The introduction makes an important point in explaining that the music of the Renaissance has a tonality and harmony all of its own, and that players need to spend time getting the feel of it. This is why it is so important to have the music in the exam repertoire, introducing it to a much wider audience and really expanding the guitarists’ repertoire and musical knowledge.

The edition uses F♯ tuning of the G string and recommends the use of a capo on the 3rd fret to bring the guitar closer to the pitch of the renaissance lute. A capo is not essential but it does make the voices much cleaner and the harmonies easier to hear.

The use of this tuning however is very important. It brings the intervals between the guitar strings in line with that of the lute, which means that the tablature can be followed more closely in the transcription and the chords flow more smoothly.

This, of course brings a new challenge to most guitarists, with notes in different places and chord shapes altered! For me it really emphasizes the importance of reading music and knowing the names of the notes on the page and on the guitar – you may be surprised that this can be a problem!

I love this music for its purity, depth and tranquility.

There are long melodic lines, interweaving and creating beautiful and complex harmonies. From a technical point of view it is all about tonal and dynamic control of melodies and harmonies. From a musical point of view the guitarist needs to recognize voices, motifs and imitation to understand the structure of the music. The thematic entries need to be brought out clearly and the dynamic control needs to be subtle so as not to interrupt the pretty constant flow of the music.

The edition helps by marking entries and imitations with capitol letters but this is an excellent opportunity for players to practice and improve their listening and interpretive skills and experimentation should be foremost!

The edition is not over fingered, which is great giving players more flexibility and choice. It is inevitable that some sacrifices in voicing, for example sustaining notes, have to be made but we should always be looking out for the importance of the interweaving lines and the dissonances and resolutions created – scrumptious!!

Book One of The Magic Guitar series, containing twenty-seven graded very easy pieces, selected and edited by Paul Gerrits. The Magic Guitar series presents a collection of pieces suitable for the first years of classical guitar study, designed to be used along with a method. The main purpose of The Magic Guitar is to give beginning guitarists the opportunity to express themselves musically at various stages of their technical development.

Skill Level
Beginner

These two volumes offer a wide range and variety of music for guitarists in their first years of playing.

At first the emphasis is on developing melodic playing combined with simple bass lines but even here the student is challenged with detailed phrasing, tied notes and right hand techniques like the arpeggio pattern in "Etude" by Carcassi.

Contemporary, Classical and Traditional styles are all mixed together helping to maintain interest and offering something for everyone, for example the popular "Greensleeves" (it is always particularly satisfying to be able to play a piece that everyone recognizes!).

As the books progress the music becomes more detailed.

The first book works up to the use of thirds in the melodic lines, more complicated bass lines requiring sustained fingered notes and up to three fingered notes together – notably in no.16 "Theme et Variation".

In "Chanson Populaire" the melody to bring out is in the bass and "Souvenir d’Espagne" introduces rasgueado chords and flamenco triplets.

The second volume includes more detailed counterpoint and requires greater musical understanding.

Higher positions are explored here, for example in "Etude"” by Coste and there is a nice mix of arpeggio style and purely melodic pieces.

I particularly enjoyed the collection of classical pieces, "Marlborough" which is an effective arrangement of this traditional melody, and the final "Valse" which is simply great fun to play and listen to!

11 Popular pieces written in order to stimulate the beginner's interest and to improve the learning of the guitar. These entertaining pieces will please players and listeners alike.

These are a nice range of pieces written in a variety of musical styles.

My favourite thing about this book is Montreuil’s phrasing. He has taken time to write specific phrasing into the music, in his words, “in such a way as to show several possibilities of articulation”. This really makes you think about how the music is constructed and how different inflections can give a piece new life. With this in mind, these pieces are musical and fun to play.

Each piece is crafted to develop different skills; the two tangos introduce the player to syncopated rhythms and complex semiquaver rhythms, and are great when played with gusto! Unusually for beginners pieces, Crépuscule and Emeraude are slow burners; this helps the player to develop a sense of space in the music, improving musicality no end as the player learns not to rush through the music. Montreuil has written more interesting chord progressions into Emeraude, making the harmonies lush.

Other techniques are covered toward the end of the book, such as strummed chords (Orgue de barbarie), and the last piece (Premier Amour) is beautifully lyrical, making use of notes higher up the first string and harmonics. Overall, these are simple yet memorable melodies with interesting musical lines that provide you with an arsenal of pieces to entertain as well as enhance your playing.

This piece is obviously written for the guitar as it exploits all the best bits, but it certainly doesn’t give the performer an easy ride! An exciting addition to any advanced guitarist's repertoire. Duarte's English Suite contains three movements: 1) Prelude, 2) Folk Song and 3) Round Dance.

Skill Level
Advanced

This work is in three movements - Prelude, Folk Song and Round Dance, all of which are full of life and movement with a strong sense of the tradition upon which they are based.

The music in the Prelude is immediately bright, sunny and spirited and I was drawn to the full rich harmonies and varied texture. There is definitely a modal feel highlighting English folk influence in the music making it easy music to explore and develop. The melodies are expansive and ‘singing’ with plenty for the player to think about in shaping and shifting rhythms. I really like the slow, minor section with its interweaving lines making very evocative music.

The Folk Song is in two sections, firstly calm and expressive and then with a little more movement. There are some beautiful melancholy melodies combined with big harmonies, dotted rhythms and sweeping arpeggios requiring good left hand movement and freedom. The feel is full and almost majestic at times but always manages to maintain the ‘folk’ simplicity.

The Round Dance is lively and energetic with a contrasting lyrical section in the middle. There are plenty of changes in time signature with an overall 9/8 that really pushes the music along, with nothing being held back in physical movement for the performer.

This piece is obviously written for the guitar as it exploits all the best bits, but it certainly doesn’t give the performer an easy ride!

I think that it is great music for the imagination and for finding out about expression and especially texture in performance.
