Ten pieces in a popular and attractive style making an ideal start to the student repertoire. These pieces are all substantial enough for "First Performance" while remaining technically accesible to early students.

Skill Level
Beginner

This is a very good collection of pieces designed to give early students some ‘proper’ pieces that start to build a repertoire and expand horizons

The pieces are technically very accessible offering a wide range of musical styles and easier techniques to explore.

The music covers all the basic technical skills and makes good use of the fingerboard with plenty of notes in higher positions on string one. The writing is very effective creating full and interesting pieces without being too difficult.

The first five pieces use a lot of arpeggio technique, interspersed with melody or with the melody as an integral part of the arpeggio. Romantic Prelude and Ballade are good examples of this.

The simple harmonic progressions and comfortable chord shapes help easy left hand movement and there is full use of a variety of right hand patterns.

Little Reverie has a beautifully simple arpeggio section at the beginning and end with a central flowing melody moving up to fifth position. Romantica is more difficult with flowing 6/8 quavers moving between arpeggio and melody, very good practice for the left hand.

The 6th piece, Triste, is very different in style, more of a ‘mood’ piece with slurs and simple syncopation helping to create lovely gentle music and encouraging expressive playing.

The last four pieces are in a blues style, excellent for working on pulse and rhythm, with movement between simple chord shapes introducing new sounds and harmonies.

Above all this music is great fun to play while offering excellent technical and musical progression for students of all ages.

Skill Level
Beginner

Above all this music is great fun to play while offering excellent technical and musical progression for students of all ages.

David Cottam manages to communicate many different musical styles using mainly simple notes, shapes and slides giving beginners access to a wider musical "atlas" and early experience of techniques such as "campanella" (cross string melodies) and articulation.

He introduces some quite difficult syncopated rhythms, but does so gradually so that you are not always aware of the offbeat rhythm until you hear the effect, and he uses easy notes so that the student can focus on the rhythm.

These pieces also explore the fretboard right from the start often using sliding chord shapes to develop the link between notes in the higher positions.

Cottam makes excellent use of finger patterns for both hands that help to produce music that sounds more difficult than it is to play - always a confidence booster for students! One of the best and most important features of the book for me is the lack of intrusive fingering. It is only marked when necessary to indicate patterns or positions that are not immediately obvious, giving teachers and students much more freedom, and developing sight-reading skills.

Examples that stood out to me include Grasshopper Guiro which develops "p" "i" technique across the strings and includes left hand strumming at the nut, and Swing Shift that uses simple sliding shapes and a swing rhythm that gradually becomes syncopated. Chimes of Saint Swithun where the slow, resonant cross string harmonies require good tonal control, and Tirandosaurus Rex where the repeated chords work on "tirando" technique and the "Primitive" direction allows the player to let rip!

My favorites have to be Icicles and Floating World where the wonderful use of natural harmonics produces beautiful, haunting melodies and harmonies through overlapping sounds. As a teacher, I highly recommend this book for students of all ages - wonderful for practising music making!

Lauro's Tríptico consists of three pieces in E minor. The first of these, Armida, is a contemplative canción named after the composer's sister. Madrugada ("before dawn") is an appoggiatura study inspired by one of Sojo's few original works for guitar. La Negra was the nickname of Lauro's niece Armida, the daughter of his sister of the same name.

I have played various pieces by Antonio Lauro over the years but never really tried Triptico. In reviewing this I discovered how much more there is in the piece than I had previously found in simply playing through. It is in three movements with loads of variety in rhythm, feel, melody and harmony and is quite accessible to players of grade 6 and above.

In many ways the music is actually quite complex, for example in the way that rhythms are combined, counterpoint between voices, and melodies with a lot of chord movement underneath.

The first movement ‘Armida” acts as a sort of prelude and has a fantastic shifting and swirling rhythm created by one beat of triplet quavers and one beat of normal quavers. Interestingly this rhythm is the same in every bar but the music does not feel at all repetitive. This is because the melody moves between voices sometimes as a single line, sometimes in octaves or thirds giving a lot of variety in colour and texture. By separating the lines you can get an excellent feel for the direction of the music straightaway and start to recognize the detail that is so important. There is a lot of movement around the fingerboard that needs to be smooth and free flowing.

The second movement ‘Madrugada’ is subtitled Cancion Venezolano, a very important clue! Cancion means song but as you look at the page all you see is chords, some of which are quite tricky with some big jumps. Playing the melody helps to build up the shape and feeling of the music while you are learning your fingering. You can also work on the chords separately to give you more opportunity to listen to the lovely scrunchy harmonies. As you look into the detail you will discover that, as in the first and third movements, the melody changes voices, a detail that you need to highlight to bring out the best in the music. The rhythm here is very simple accentuating the long flowing melody that does not want to be interrupted by, but enhanced by the chords.

The third movement ‘La Negra’ is subtitled Vals Venezolano and is a lovely flowing, syncopated and lively waltz, with voices bringing out different rhythms and the pulse shifting between 2 and 3 in a bar, typical of this style of music. Here I would go as far as saying that you cannot play this properly without separating out and playing the individual voices (musical lines).

As you learn the music the overall effect in your left hand is of chord shapes but the music is not chordal in sound. The harmonies are built up and created by the contrapuntal voices, that is the musical lines moving independently. This is a difficult effect to achieve on the guitar and needs a lot of attention for the best results. Working like this also helps you to bring out the individual rhythms and develop more interest and excitement through your rhythm.

This piece is from the repertoire that brought a lot of people of my generation to the guitar, and still does due to its rich, evocative musical language.

It is part of the huge contribution that Andres Segovia made to our repertoire by inspiring and encouraging new composers to write guitar music, without which I am sure we would not be where we are today.

The key is the way that Turina uses the characteristics of the guitar to create the emotion, depth and colour in the music. The piece is very much written for the guitar with a fantastic and varied texture created using ponticello, tasto, rasgueado, subito dynamics and loads of musical instruction on the score.

The music also uses the natural tone colours of the guitar, for example the full and mellow sound high up on the inner strings, and accuracy in right hand articulation is important.

The two movements are based on flamenco dance forms, which are distinguished by, among other things, their rhythmic patterns.

Garrotin has an exciting opening and driving rhythm. There is a lot of variety with melodic motifs tying the movement together, lots of slurring, rasgueado and golpe.

The singing melodies contrast with driving repeated notes, rhythmical chords and flowing scales. Soleares is more flamenco in style in its distinctive rhythm, rolling arpeggio patterns, sequences of scales and triplets. Slurring is very important for free movement as well as texture and rhythm, and much of the fingering is for colour.

Overall this piece reflects the flamenco tradition while remaining classical in style. It is a true guitar piece using the guitars attributes to the full and it is very exciting piece – an important part of the repertoire.

A musical excursion into the beautiful countryside of the county of Derbyshire which is set in the heart of England known as the 'Peak District'. Lathkill Dale, Bleaklow, Kinder Downfall, Arbor Low, Litton, Millers Dale and Peak Cavern are the names of each of the seven movements which make up this suite which lasts approximately 30 minutes. The music tries to capture the mood of each of these contrasting areas: from the tranquillity and beauty of Lathkill Dale and Miller's Dale and the mysterious and dramatic Arbor Low and Bleaklow, through to the humorous Litton and the awe and power of Kinder Downfall and Peak Cavern. The album contains a brief description of each area

Skill Level
Intermediate

This suite consists of 7 movements with lots of contrast in character, mood and atmosphere, and with plenty of musical and technical challenges.

In fact I think the most important factor in Steve’s music is the musicianship, challenging the player to explore the written notes and find the movement and emotion within the piece.

The titles of the individual movements in this suite are very evocative and the way the music is written reflects this beautifully. For example the syncopated melody within the arpeggios and the dissonant harmonies definitely create a mysterious feel in Bleaklow and the fast, tumbling arpeggios give you a real sense of a dramatic waterfall in Kinder Downfall.

Millers Dale is a beautiful, gentle piece with a dramatic centre section that includes one of my favourite ‘buildups’! I visited Millers Dale a few years ago and was amazed at how well this piece reflects the landscape and feel of the place.

The 5th movement, Litton, is written in sections with instructions as to the order and repeats. It has a festive and dance like feel that put me in mind of a village fete or celebration before I looked it up and found that Litton is a village!

The final movement, Peak Cavern, is very dramatic with running semiquavers that change from flowing and swirling patterns to rhythmical and energetic passages and back again.

This really is a lovely set of pieces that will enhance your repertoire and expand your musical ideas. I think that it is music written from the heart, about places that the composer knows and cares about. With the wonders of the internet you can look up the landscape as you learn the music, although the way that the music is written really does create a picture and feeling for you to develop. Some of the sounds are definitely challenging but they go towards creating a sound picture that is compelling and inspiring.

Great fun!

Bringing alive the Jazz era with five stylish pieces capturing the atmosphere of the 1940's. They are easy to play and they will be enjoyed by the most sophisticated jazz connoisseur.

Skill Level
Beginner

These pieces capture the 1940s jazz style beautifully and are great fun to play, from the straightforward 2-part Ragatelle, to the more technically and musically complex Icy Blue.

As a player it is easy to get into the "atmosphere" of the music with fantastic harmonies and off beat rhythms that are not difficult to understand or execute, but are really effective when played fluently.

This is particularly noticeable in Mississippi Ditty with his use of ties, slurs and accents.

The off beat rhythms and "swing" are easy to get into at the beginning of the book as there is a constant crotchet pulse maintained in the bass which helps to drive and shape the music.

In Steely Blue, the bass line comes and goes, highlighting the "solo" melodic passages, which include very effective use of "glissando".

There are detailed dynamic indications throughout the book that really add to the experience as they initially teach you the style through shaping the music. You can then enjoy playing and bring your own interpretation to the pieces.

Icy Blue provides a contrast in the book because it uses constant quavers that produce a driving, exciting feel to the music and require some quick thinking!

My favourite piece from the collection has to be Swing Swang Lane. I love the slow and thoughtful atmosphere of this piece with its moving harmonies, relaxed swing and simple, flowing melody.

Many of the works of Weiss were originally grouped by common key and it is to be assumed that the composer intended them to be performed as suites. However, it is from a number of unrelated pieces that the present anthology is taken - exceptions being the Ciacona, which belongs to the tenth 'suite', and Pasagaille from the fourteenth. In my opinion the set of eight pieces offered here represents Weiss at his most inspired.

Skill Level
Intermediate
Advanced

In my opinion the music of Weiss is a must for every guitarist. It is a great introduction to the music of the Baroque, being written specifically for the lute and so feeling more natural under the left hand when compared to the Bach lute suites

The Baroque lute was of course a very different instrument to our classical guitar, but the only real compromise is on bass lines and this edition is very well done with good explanations about the original music, ornamentation and steps taken to fit the music onto the guitar in the most effective and sympathetic way.

This information (contained in the preface – essential reading!) and the way that the music is fingered gives the player control. This is important; we have to remember that the music is transcribed from another instrument and there should be flexibility for the performer. For example, the editor decides the length of sustained notes as the original tablature does not show this. Burley points this out and it is important to be aware of this when learning the pieces, teaching you to listen to and interpret the music and not just learn technique and fingers.

The pieces in this volume are simply fantastic. The music has great depth and intensity with big chord progressions and sequences, long melodic phrases, wonderful clashes and resolutions in the harmony, lovely scrunchy dissonant chords and real musical drive created through melody and rhythm.

The notes carry us over the whole range of the fingerboard with rising sweeping arpeggios in the Fantasie, very long slow melodies in the Tombeau and lovely variations of melody in the Ciacona and Passagaille. The majesty of the latter is brilliant and overall the pieces are packed with emotion and excitement.

The Capricio is lively with driving counterpoint and great arpeggio chord progressions and the simplicity of the main theme of the Ciacona is sublime, the melody being varied over the same sequence throughout and always returning to that simple statement creating very powerful music.

This is difficult music and requires good technique, rhythm and pulse, however it is the musicality that shines through and teaches us so much about feeling our way through pieces and being directed by the sound and movement of the harmony and melody.

These pieces are quite unusual, full of folk character and melody expertly blended with a ‘contemporary’ feel, fantastic harmonies and clashes, contrasting textures and techniques and Brouwer’s usual exciting use of rhythm and articulation.

The pieces are difficult but very ‘guitaristic’ meaning that they flow nicely under the fingers and once you have learnt the fingering and technique you get a lot of satisfaction from the freedom of movement around the guitar and through the music.

The melodies are lovely but come with a twist, keeping you on your toes and piquing your (and the listeners) interest!

Both pieces are marked with 2 time signatures, ‘simple’ 3 in a bar 3/4 and ‘compound’ 2 in a bar 6/8. This is great for learning how to feel the pulse and for recognizing and highlighting the differences. The overall structure of the pieces is also similar with an ‘A’ section that returns after contrasting ‘B’ and ‘C’ sections.

The pizzicato arpeggio melodies at the beginning of Guajira have lovely lilt and movement highlighted by the wide range of pitch and the 3 voices ‘talking’ in counterpoint are very effective in the first contrasting section. When this melody returns in the major key it is more expansive with the music opening out before the return of the pizzicato theme from the beginning bringing the piece to a fading finish.

The introduction of Zapateado is also lilting in character, 4 bars of 6/8 and 4 bars of 3/4, repetitive and with a narrow range of notes that gives quite a restless feel to the music.

The second section has a melody that changes in pulse throughout with a lower voice that uses the opposite pulse, for example the upper voice is in 3/4 with the lower voice in 6/8 and in the next bar they swap! This is syncopated rhythm that needs real concentration at first but once mastered gives great results and is very satisfying. The ‘C’ section has 2 voices starting high and an octave apart and gradually converging, again with crossing rhythms and a sense of the music building and then losing tension towards the return of the opening section at the end.

The symmetry in the music is very clever giving us ideas to hang on to, always drawing the listener in but never sounding predictable. These are 2 beautiful little pieces, an enticing musical style captured in an instant.

These are excellent books and I find myself asking, "Why wasn't this sort of syllabus available years ago". Preparing an exam syllabus is much more difficult than it may seem, and a thankless job, but with these books they have got it just right.

They are beautifully laid out with clear printing and just a little fingering that is by no means intrusive and allows the students to really learn about the guitar fingerboard. The best thing however is the way that they introduce the history of music to guitarists, from the thirteenth to the twenty first century, with very sympathetic arrangements throughout that allow you to forget that the pieces were not originally written for the guitar!

As guitarists, we have a wonderful repertoire of music but it is great to have the opportunity to experience the music of Mozart, Handel and Beethoven in a first hand and positive way. This is especially important for young people to develop understanding and enjoyment of classical music (and for GCSE and A level exams!) For this reason, I will happily use these books for all of my students in future whether taking exams or not.

There is a good mix of music throughout including traditional, classical, jazz influenced, popular and song arrangements, in solo and duo formats. Many of the pieces have explanatory notes of, for example, the history of the piece, translation of the title, and original format as in accompanied song or original instrument.

All of the early dance forms are explained and given context so that the student is learning far more than just (!) how to play the guitar. There are 36 pieces in the first volume and 32 in the second so you are getting an awful lot of music for your money! Each piece also states clearly the year in which it was written so, as the books quote, "you can map your journey through time."

The books clearly cover all the technical requirements of the first years of learning including legato melodies, shaping phrases, articulation and ensemble playing to name but a few.

To summarise the choice of music, quality and suitability of arrangements, and accompanying notes are all excellent. There are many recognisable tunes "throughout the ages" and contrast in styles from Personent Hodie (1360) to Bach (1736), and from our own Aguado (1843) to Granados (1902) and Lennon/McCartney (1966)!

The editions are easy to read with a level of fingering that is not overpowering and I can truly say that all the pieces are enjoyable to play (from personal experience!)

Highly recommended.

Grade 1 pieces

  • Ductia: a gentle flowing melody in 6/8 time using the open D string as accompaniment.
  • Branle d’Ecosse: a lot of running quavers in this dance using the open A string as accompaniment.
  • Gavotte: this lively dance by Handel has been arranged as a duet. The student’s part is a single line melody on the treble strings with a steady crotchet and quaver rhythm.
  • Douce dame jolie: this is a "virelais" which is an old French musical form related to dancing. It has an interesting syncopated rhythm and open A as accompaniment.
  • Leccion: a simple single line melody "Alla marcia"! in 2/4 time
  • Valse: a flowing waltz using an arpeggio style in the first half and then separating into 2 voices.
  • El Noy de la Mare: this is a duet arrangement of a beautiful traditional Catalan melody in F major using a dotted crotchet rhythm.
  • Poor Wayfaring Stranger: an arrangement of a traditional spiritual with an interesting syncopated rhythm.
  • One Hand, One Heart: a lovely arrangement of this song from Westside Story, with simple melody using long sustained notes in G major.
  • The Dangers of Poking Holes in Ice: as the title suggests this is great fun with staccato and accent articulation and dynamics that are vital to bring out the character.

Grade 2 pieces

  • Pavane: a short stately dance using 2 and 3 note chords.
  • Can she excuse my wrongs: a duet arrangement of this beautiful Dowland song. The student plays the vocal line including some syncopated rhythms and changes of pulse.
  • Farewell Manchester: this is a lively little piece, mostly in 2 voices with more challenging left hand changes.
  • Aria detta la Frescobalda: a duet arrangement; the student plays a single line melody which uses long tied notes, mostly in 2nd and 5th positions. In the key of E minor.
  • Ode to Joy: an excellent arrangement of this popular melody using 2 voices.
  • Menuet: a duet arrangement of this famous Haydn Menuet with longer quaver passages in the melody and detailed left hand fingering using positions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
  • The Sixpence: a traditional Irish melody with a lot of quaver passages and dotted rhythms and some fingered bass notes; in G major.
  • Here, There and Everywhere: a very effective duet arrangement of this Lennon/ McCartney song. The melody is syncopated requiring a good feel for the pulse and style.

A compilation of original plectrum guitar repertoire that sets out to inspire while also developing technique and musicianship. The aim has been to create a progressive selection of pieces that is accessible to relative beginners as well as to more experienced players, the diversity of styles providing something for every musical taste, whether it be blues, rock, classical, folk, reggae, pop or metal.

Skill Level

This is a compilation of original plectrum guitar pieces by Nick Powlesland and Lee Sollory designed to inspire players while developing technique and musicianship.

The book uses music notation throughout which is excellent for the young plectrum guitarist, and means that the pieces are just as suitable for classical guitarists providing an excellent variety and contrast in style from the standard repertoire.

The music is challenging in details of articulation, dynamics and phrasing right from the start with the simplest pieces and each piece has a definite character and mood to get into! This is particularly evident in the musical directions which include "aggressively", "punchy", "easily, into the night" and "in a hurry", really encouraging feeling in young players.

The exciting counting and early development of strumming, bends and slides are all important for becoming a "rounded" guitarist and there are some great harmonies, notably in Tomorrow Will Be Better and Tuesday Bluesday.

The complete works for lute solo newly transcribed and annotated, including historical and performance notes. This publication is very nicely printed with space between lines and around notes so for those of us who either wear or should wear spectacles it makes life a lot easier. This edition is Selina's favourite and in her opinion the best!

This album moves up to around Grade 4, (although a couple of pieces of Grade 3 have sneaked in) and there are more 'unknown' pieces than in the previous two books, the collection being the better for it; Claude Gagnon emerges yet again, this time with four pieces and there are two fingerstyle compositions by Jacques Chandonnet... ...these albums are presented to a high standard.
