Description

The A series is a very striking instrument and this guitar is in very good condition still reflecting Gary’s immaculate finishing. I particularly like the head of the guitar and the wonderfully smooth and unusual tuners. Admittedly it does take a little while to get used to the smaller (than a standard classical) neck shape and the cutaway but once you have settled and readjusted your bearings she has a very easy left hand action and of course playing high up is a doddle!

The sound of the guitar is very direct, what I think of as a ‘woody’ tone that is strong through focus and substance rather than big resonance. Her voice is clear and defined with a quick response and projection, and a full bodied, rich bass register.

When I started playing she felt quite tight and firm under the right hand fingers with not as much sound as I was expecting from my choice of right hand finger strokes. However after listening out front and then returning to the guitar I realised that she must really be ‘asleep’ due to lack of any real playing in recent times. In fact each time I started to play after writing notes I could hear her voice filling and blossoming, regaining its depth and subtle resonance. I was particularly pleased after writing “I can hear change with every 10 minutes I play” to hear a significant blooming of the treble voice showing a mellow and smooth character always maintaining definition across the range.

The bass is firm with an intense vibrant feel, very full and ‘fat’ notes, a particularly rousing bass ‘D’ resonance, and very good impact and direction. In the Passacaglia by Weiss this substantial bass voice gave great support easily highlighting this important line and producing strong musical movement. The treble helped me to contrast the ever changing textures and moods of the variations ranging from velvet and dolce to lovely sparkle and excitement as the music builds.

In the Allemande from Bach’s 1st cello suite I enjoyed the integrity of the melodic line with controlled tone and inner details that were clear and well supported. I think that there is plenty more to come from this guitar if she finds an owner who will cherish her by maintaining and developing her voice through lots of playing!

After another break I really enjoyed the growing sonority in Birds by Gary Ryan, with a gentle halo around the sound from the campanella style and a ‘honeyed’, bass tone supporting clear and defined upper melody.

To finish I played Capricho Arabe by Tarrega. I was pleased with the warmth and radiance of the sound that highlighted the character of the music. The clarity of voicing was great with the bass again driving the piece beautifully.

Despite her age this guitar is definitely a ‘work in progress’ which is great news when buying a pre owned guitar. An exciting prospect.
